So yeah...I've pretty much failed as far as SGU reviews go, but maybe I'll update on my thoughts since "Darkness" sometime soon. I will say though, the most recent episode of SGU (Time) was excellent.

In other news, I just had to share this absolutely awesome video I found on YouTube recently. It's funny, as I find myself liking certain songs these days only after someone does something unique with them. For example, I was never too crazy about "Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey, but I absolutely loved the version that the Glee cast recorded for the pilot episode.

Simlarly, this video just made me smile at its awesomeness:

That's all for now. Hope to update soon!

Darkness - - not quite there yet.

So here I am again, writing my third review of and SGU episode.  This week's episode titled "Darkness" has left me a bit conflicted, even more so than the first three parts of "Air".  And I'm finding it hard to express in words just what I'm feeling, and I'm wondering if I'm alone in this.  I'll try to do my best to make this as coherent as possible though, so here goes:

Something is missing for me.

This is the best way I can describe the feeling I'm having.  I like SGU so far, I really do.  It's intriguing, relatively well-written, the sets are stunning, and the actors are well-cast.  So what's the problem?

For me, it's that there's just that something missing for me so far.  I haven't really been wowed by any of the episodes so far, which isn't necessarily a bad thing or all that surprising.  Still, I almost feel as if I'm missing something when people come out of "Darkness" saying they loved it, or that it was the best episode they've seen yet.  I understand opinions and personal taste and such, which is why I can't fault SGU itself for this.  I'm just hoping that I can experience that moment soon, as I have many times with past SG-1 and SGA episodes.

And using the recurring theme of "something is missing for me", I'll outline what I thought of the plot and character moments of "Darkness".

Overall feelings:

So you may be wondering at this point, where exactly do I stand with regards to SGU and "Darkness"?  To be truthful, it's still hard for me to put into really succint words...which is why I hope you read this whole entry and were able to decipher what I am going on about.

I like SGU.  Plain and simple.  It is definitely not bad so far, and the potential is absolutely enormous with what they could do with the show.  My biggest fears, as of right now, lie in whether or not they'll capitalize on this potential.  I am waiting for that episode that absolutely takes my breath away, as some SG1 and SGA episodes have done in the past.  I'm waiting for the hint that TPTB are going in a solid direction.  But most of all, I'm still optimistic (for the most part) and intrigued.

I have no doubt that SGU will become a show that I absolutely love.  For me, it's just a question of when it will get there...and whether or not they'll really screw up (by my definition) some aspects of it along the way.

I'm certainly hopeful...and certainly going to keep watching.

Thanks for reading guys :)

Don't Forget to Breathe

So I've learned an important lesson in watching this last episode of SGU:  Don't watch SGU with your friends!.

Perhaps this varies, and my friends both really like SGU, but I found that I enjoyed "Air part 3" much more when I watched it alone this morning.  There were less distractions, and I just tended to notice a lot more.  And while I'll still probably watch SGU with my friends (one of them is my roommate), I'll probably re-watch it the next day anyways before I write any sort of review.  Having said that, here's what I thought of the conclusion to "Air":

Overall:

In general, I will say I liked this episode only slightly less than last week's.  And this is why I keep reminding myself that "Air" is really a 3-part single episode.  It'd be a bit unfair to criticize it on its own too much.  SGU is off to a decent (albeit slow) start.  Here's to hoping "Darkness" really kicks it into gear next week.  I, for one, am eagerly anticipating it :)

SGU Premiere

What a ride.  You know, I distinctly remember first coming to GW last Spring.  Now, after months of waiting we've finally been treated to the premiere of the show we've been waiting for.  If you don't feel like reading my lengthy review, then just scroll to my overall thoughts.  Otherwise, read on.

Overall:

The Good:  Excellent characterization, solid concept and lots of potential, great set, great music, stellar cast, and a great balance between drama and humor/lighter material.

The "Bad":  Notice, I don't say it's straight up bad because I don't truly think it's the case yet.  However, my concerns are eventual disparities in screen-time for some characters over others and the possibility that TPTB may focus too much on the character drama and less on the plot.  I never thought I'd actually say that, and I am in no way saying I got that vibe to any great extent from the pilot.  The pilot is a bad episode to judge things like plot on, as it's usually  very fast-paced and tries to fit a lot in.  I'll just keep an eye on this in the future and see where it goes.

And that's all folks!  Look forward to hearing what you might have to say and/or add to what I've said!

Eve of SGU, GateWorld and Friends

So I decided I wanted to be cool like Jel, PG and Pan...so here's my awesome LJ account.  It's all I could come up with in a short time, but maybe I'll customize it more in the future.  It's always hard to figure formatting out on new interfaces, and it's even worse when you don't even own Photoshop for really cool customized layouts.  In any case, here I am!

SGU airs tomorrow night.  Of course, most reading this don't need to be told that.  Needless to say, I'm looking forward to it and have been for a very long while.  Everything from the characters to the shooting style has me interested, and I'm excited to see how it all comes together tomorrow night.  Even more so, I'm looking forward to discussing it with fellow users of Gateworld.  More specifically, the people I've come to regard as friends.  Sure the random comments from Gateworld's many users are fine, but I am most interested in discussing this new Stargate with the people who have proven to be intelligent, thoughtful, and mostly-objective.

GW has been riddled with all sorts of ridiculousness since I've been there (and surely since it's inception).  Which is why it's always nice when you meet people who (while being awesomely snarktastic) are capable of delivering very insightful posts, and I'm looking forward to having in-depth discussions about episodes, plot lines, episode science, relationships, and all manner of related material.

In short, thanks guys for making my time on GW so awesome so far.  Here's to future discussion, and here's to tomorrow's premiere!
